How to complete “Sheerside Mountains” Hunting Grounds in Horizon Forbidden West
The Sheerside Mountains are one of the first Tenakht Hunting Grounds that players will come across along their way up to the Bulwark of the Sky Clan. Much like all of the Hunting Grounds, there are three challenges with time limits that players have to complete in order to finish it. We'll go over the specifics of these challenges and how to go about completing each one.
How to complete the Frost Trial
This first challenge focuses on players making the Bellowbacks brittle and breaking their Cargo Refining Sacs. These are the sacs on the gullet and butt. The Brittle status isn't applied to machines until the chill symbol above the machine has filled and is highlighted with a line of white. In order to complete the challenge, players will have to break three of the refining sacs while the Bellowback is still Brittle.
What to use to beat this challenge
- Use Frost Ammo - This is fairly obvious, but there are several different types of elemental weapons that offer frost ammo. Try to use the best or all of the frost options available in order to get the Bellowback to the brittle state.
- Use Explosive and Tear Ammo - Once the Bellowback is in the brittle state, the best things to use in order to burst their cargo sacs is explosive and tear ammo. This will ensure that the sacs burst as quickly as possible without removing the brittle status.
- Use Elemental Surge - In the Trapper skill tree, players can find the Valor Surge called Elemental Surge. This will double the amount of elemental damage targets take and cause them to gain status effects faster.
The biggest part of this challenge is to consider what Bellowback type players want to go after first. There are three Bellowbacks and a single Rollerback within this area. Two of the three Bellowbacks are Frost-based, meaning they will be less affected by frost elemental effects and damage.

How to complete the Shredder Catch Trial
Depending on where players are at in the storyline, they may or may not already have a Shredder Gauntlet. If not, luckily players can purchase a Shredder Gauntlet from the Hunter here on the grounds. This will cost players 467 Metal Shards and a single Leaplasher Circulator.
This challenge is simply about learning how to effectively use the Shredder Gauntlet. It needs the player to hit a target with the shredder three times in a row, catching it each time it comes back. After the third time, it will be fully charged, and Aloy can throw it to deal some serious damage. Players will need to complete a fully charged attack twice before the time is up.

How to complete the Plasma Blast Trial
Once again, this challenge requires a specific type of ammo that all players may or may not have found yet. The necessary ammo is called Plasma. Luckily, players can purchase a Plasma Boltcaster from the Hunter on the grounds for 549 Metal Shards and a Sunwing Circulator.
This challenge requires players to get the single Rollerback within the arena not only overloaded with Plasma but also create a Plasma Blast, twice. The Plasma Blast cannot be activated until the end of the Plasma overload state on the Rollerback has nearly ended. Make sure to hit them right at the end of the state in order to create the Plasma Blast.
